Why get involved with Surge?

All positions at Surge are unpaid, however there are some fantastic benefits if you get involved.

First and foremost, you'll be part of a fast growing, multiple award winning student radio station. We're well respected in the student radio community, and if you're looking into radio as a career, your work with us will look great on your CV.

As a Surge DJ, you'll also have access to all the latest releases and music news, and from time to time you might even get free gig tickets or band merchandise.

As a member you'll be able to use our studios and resources, enabling you to create demos to send to prospective employers and awards entries. We'll continue to offer these facilities wherever possible even after you've left University.

We look after all our members and have some fantastic socials throughout the year. 

Surge News Team :: Reporter

Our gold student-radio award winning news team is looking for individuals who share a passion for current affairs and student related news. The news team exists to provide an accurate and student- focused news service to the students of Southampton University.

As a reporter on our news team you will report to the Surge Head of News. The role is a varied one
and may require you to:

  • Help prepare our weekly news magazine show NewsWeek
  • Obtain and record interviews relevant to current news items
  • Prepare and present a daily news bulletin once a week.
  • Attend events and provide an audio report on them
  • Assist with special one-off broadcasts such as Election Night Live
  • Get out of bed early on a Sunday morning to cover a breaking news story on campus!

Full training will be provided in all areas of news preparation and production including an introduction to the legal elements involved, training in how to use the industry standard virtual newsroom 'Burli' and a crash course in audio production techniques.

Surge News Team :: Entertainment Editor

Our gold student-radio award winning news team is seeking an individual to lead development of our new weekly entertainment news based magazine show. We are looking for an individual with a passion for a wide range of entertainment areas possibly including film, tv, live music, printed media, and gaming. The Entertainment Editor will report to the Head of News, but will have operational control over the weekly preparation and production of the show.

This position may require you to:

  • Establish and maintain contacts at various promo companies. 
  • Manage a team of reporters, and delegate tasks to them.
  • Attend events / press conferences and provide an audio report on them.
  • Ensure the preparation, production and broadcast of a weekly Entertainment based news show.
  • Recruit new reporters and train them in basic audio production techniques.

This position would be ideal for anyone with previous experience within Surge, who has an interest in the entertainment industry. Full training will be provided in all areas of news preparation and production including an introduction to the legal elements involved, training in how to use the industry standard virtual newsroom 'Burli' and a crash course in audio production techniques.
